Scarce antique copperplate engraving titled RUINS OF THE BRIDGE OF AUGUSTUS OVER THE RIVER NERA NEAR NARNI IN ITALY, engraved by A. Smith. We found the print, loose & unmounted, when searching through the stock of an antiquarian print shop which has been in storage since a member of our family closed the shop forty years ago - and this was clearly one of the oldest engravings in his stock. It is said to be from DRAKE'S VOYAGES, but so many books were written about Drake's Voyages that we have been unable to identify which one this came from . . . . the high cloth content of the paper, the nature of the engraving, and the style of the lettering are clearly pre-1750 and may even be pre-1700, although the colouring may be later. It is NOT a reproduction. This lovely print would be suitable for mounting & framing.Page size 225mmx323mm Aperture 14ommx235mmIN VERY GOOD ANTIQUARIAN CONDITION - AND 260-300 YEARS OLD
