Up for auction is this vintage or antique, Yale & Towne skeleton key and fob for room #426 at the now demolished Onondaga Hotel, in Syracuse, NY. Key contains the following info: YALE & TOWNE MFG. CO. STAMFORD, CONN. U.S. and on the backside: THE ONONDAGA. Fob is made of a stiff, masonite like material and is stamped with the room #426, THE ONONDAGA, SYRACUSE, N.Y., and on the opposite side, a postage seal saying: CARRIER MAY RETURN BY MAIL POSTAGE 2 CENTS, UNSEALED. Key meaures approx. 3" long, and fob measures almost 4". I looked up a bit of information on the Onondaga Hotel out of curiosity, and here is what I found: The 11-story Onondaga Hotel comprised two buildings in Syracuse, N.Y., the original building that faced Jefferson Street, which was built in 1910, and the annex that faced Warren Street, which was built in 1915. The Onondaga’s first registered guest, on Aug. 20, 1910, was Vaudeville star Lew Dockstader. Among the hotel’s amenities were the Louis Room that was next to the ballroom, the Old English Inn that had murals with scenes of medieval chivalry, and a private ladies dining room. The overriding theme at the Onondaga was Hiawatha in his canoe, and wallpaper in the hotel coordinated with that theme, as did other Syracuse China patterns.
