Boutruche, … / Quatrieme triage a 10,000 exemplaires. / Division de l’Ouvrage. / … Paris, / Chez d’Aubree … / 1844.” The atlas is divided into four parts, whose composition is as follows: ancient history, embracing 5369 years; the history of the middle ages, embracing about 1000 years; modern history, embracing the 383 years preceding 1844; and ‘The Religions of the World,’ giving the histories of all of the ancient and modern religions, the principal sects and the principal philosophical schools. THIS 1844 BOUTRUCHE ATLAS IS FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS HENRI DE LA TOUR D’AUVERGNE-LAURAGUAIS. IN 1916, PRINCE HENRI DE LA TOUR D’AUVERGNE-LAURAGUAIS MARRIED ELISABETH BERTHIER DE WAGRAM, DAUGHTER OF THE THIRD PRINCE DE WAGRAM AND A MEMBER OF THE ROTHSCHILD DYNASTY. The House of De La Tour d’Auvergne includes within its lines the Counts of Auvergne and Boulogne, the Viscounts of Turenne and Princes of Sedan, and the Dukes of Bouillon and Albret. The line of De La Tour d’Auvergne-Lauraguais became in the 1896 the final surviving line of the House of De La Tour d’Auvergne. De La Tour d’Auvergne-Lauraguais are one of only six families (alongside the houses of Savoie, Lorraine, Grimaldi, Rohan and La Tremoille) to be granted the rights and privileges accorded to foreign princes. The atlas is complete in all respects. The volume measures about 51 cm by 37.5 cm by 2.7 cm; each leaf measures about 500 mm by 360 mm. The volume is in excellent condition internally and in very good to excellent condition externally. It is bound in mid-19th century half-calf over marbled boards, with the original title label upon the upper board. The binding shows moderate to heavy wear at the edges. The lower left corner of the top board has broken off. The hinges and book-block have weakened somewhat with the top leaf and attached printed description loose. Internally, the printed description and uncut plates are quite clean and bright, with wide margins and clear print throughout. One fold-out in the printed description has seperated, although nothing is missing. The plates and maps are excellent impressions in all cases and the hand-colouring is vibrant. The leaves show minor and occasional foxing, but generally the atlas is quite attractive internally.
