This auction is for Kentucky Bybee Pottery Cheese/Butter Dome "Bybee Red & Sand Spongeware" This is official Bybee Pottery from Bybee , Kentucky . The oldest existing pottery west of the Alleghenies, Bybee Pottery is located in the small rural town of Bybee , among the southern hills of Madison County , Kentucky . The log building has housed the equipment and business of the Bybee Pottery for over a century. Legend states that this pottery was originally established in 1809, and actual sales records prove its existence as early as 1845. I grew up about 20 minutes from t and have been amassing items since childhood. I unfortunately have to pare down my items for a possible move. I hate to part with these, but I know someone will treasure them! The condition is wonderful with no obvious chips or gouges. Please bear in mind that primitive style pottery, such as Bybee, often has imperfections and variations in color and texture. This pottery is all made by hand and the fact that all pieces are not uniformly perfect only adds to the charm. Check my photos to see the official "BB" on the bottom of the pieces (sometimes they also mark it with an additional " Bybee , Kentucky " or " Cornelison Pottery Bybee , Kentucky "). This piece is Bybee Sand with Red Spongeware (or "speckled"). It is perfect for serving cheese balls or butter. read more
