Muller collection Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido- In 1832 Hiroshige traveled with an entourage of the shogun's officials from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto along the Tokaido road. This journey was an eye opening and life changing experience for him. As an urban man of Edo he had experienced life mainly in the capital. His journey along the Tokaido, through the rural enclaves and natural beauty of his country, had a deep impact on Hiroshige. He immediately returned to Edo after the trip and began his masterwork woodblock series from the sketches he had made along the amazing journey. Viewing the completed series, from beginning to end in actual woodblock print form is the intended way to see the Hoeido Tokaido. This woodblock print set offers the opportunity to be transported back in time to Hiroshige's Japan in the shadow of the Tokogawa shogunate and to see this life as Hiroshige intended. Hiroshige's woodblock prints are instantly recognizable landscape works from 19th century Japan. His love of the Japanese countryside comes through in his work. Even today as one travels the highways of Japan, or gazes from the window of a speeding express train, Hiroshige comes to mind many times a day. Each print sold with certificate of authenticity from Fuji Arts (noting Muller collection provenance). Condition- Excellent unless otherwise noted. Muller was known as a first rate conservator and took exquisite care when storing his prints. These woodblocks are clearly old prints showing the markers of paper that is 70 years old with the wonderful sense of an old print. The Robert O. Muller Collection for Japanese art enthusiasts- Robert Muller is regarded by curators, collectors and scholars as the individual who compiled the finest collection of 20th century Japanese woodblock prints in the world. After his death in April of 2003, 4000 Japanese woodblock prints were donated to the Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian. Other parts of his collection were sold. Muller's collection was the major source of prints for several books on Japanese woodblocks and his prints were exhibited all over the world.
