Description Civil War model 1859 Artillery bit. This is in non-dug condition as it came out of a barn or shed in Winchester Va. Very light surface rust and having the thin shell of brass coating on the outside of the branches. The brass coating is dark and toned so it does not show up like brass in the photos. The ring on one side has been forcefully torn out. Otherwise in good condition. This type of bit is pictured in Horse Equipment of the Civil War by Howard R. Crouch on page 91. A scarce variant pattern of a Civil War bit. Much rarer than the Cavalry pattern. A bit of this type is shown on the cover of the current issue of North South Trader Magazine.
