A rare original illustrated SQUIRREL HUNTERS DISCHARGE issued by David Tod, Governor of Ohio, to those citizen volunteers who answered the call in September 1862 to defend the city of Cincinnati from possible attack by Confederate soldiers under General John Hunt Morgan. These volunteers, known as the "Squirrel Hunters", many of whom were old veterans, were thousands of Minute Men who provided their own weapons and ammunition, and answered the Governor's call for assistance. This certificate was issued to F. Ireland, one of that legendary group. Size 9 x 11 1/2, blank reverse, minor tears and creases, some age discoloration and foxing, overall very good condition.
