Here's a nice BIG NC pottery floor vase that was made by Arthur Ray (A.R.) Cole at his shop in Sanford NC. This probably dates back to the 40's or 50's, and is one of his best known and most loved shapes. It's got 3 braided "rope" handles, and it's colored in the hard to find Green multicolor or mason glaze. Arthur liked to use these old multicolor, drippy glazes on his pots, and he used several Primary colors in his underglaze. The pot would be dipped in a solid color, then the splatters would be added over top of it. 90% of the pots you see in a Mason use either White or Turquoise as the primary color. Blue primary is harder to find, but the green and maroon seem to be extremely rare. The only other big green multicolor vase I can recall seeing from his shop is the 23" Spider vase in my personal collection. While this shape is what you'd care scarce rather than rare, the glaze is anything but! The vase stands 18" tall by about 11" across the handle and belly. Other than a couple of scattered glaze skips (one under the rim, a couple at the foot) and a small "Zit" (Small bit of stray clay that stuck to the body before glazing) on the body, it's in excellent condition.
