Early 19th century linen and silk work Adam and Eve sampler. This sampler is just wonderful with fine stitch work throughout. The top section is decorated with examples of alphabet lettering and the following verse Next unto God dear friends I do address myself to you in humble thankfulness. For all your cost and care on me bestowed and means of learning unto me allowed. Go on kind parent and let me still pursue to learn the golden art the vulger never knew At the end of the verse is the maker's details "Meria L No 2 Aged 11 1804" I've never seen this on a sampler before, where the maker doesn't put their surname. Also, I don't know what the No2 refers to - unless she was doing a series of samplers and this was the second one. Beneath the verse is a superb Tree of Life complete with entwined serpent and Adam & Eve on either side. Crowned lions, cherubs, birds and floral motifs on either side. The whole thing is surrounded by a floral border, apart from the bottom edge. The linen has slight overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the silks are good. As can seen on the photographs, there is some damage to the linen where the verse is and the odd, small hole elsewhere. Measures 13" x 13.5" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
