Here are a couple fascinating vintage hobby publications for vintageLionel fans from Carmen Webster’s New York – based Model Railroad Equipment Corp., a catalog and newsletter circa 1950. The catalog is 8-1/2” x 11” in size and 48 pages. The “Rail Chatter” newsletter is dated March 1950 and is 5-1/4” x 8-1/2” in size, 8 pages. The catalog contains many interesting pictures of Carmen in various publicity poses of the time plus several very cool views of the sales counters with tinplate and scale equipment on display, even including some standard gauge pieces from before the war. The catalog includes a shot of MREC employee Ralph Barr who was in charge of the Lionel department and was working for Lionel in 1907! The “Rail Chatter” newsletter includes an amazing announcement on the back page indicating (I suppose from Carmen’s Lionel sources at the time) that Lionel was going to be re-releasing the Lionel #763 in 1950! Also that a special set of valve gear detail parts for the loco would be sold individually! So much for that industry inside scoop. Of course, the Hudson did come out as the 773 in 1950 in a different form than the 763, and there was no valve gear detail set. Carmen did get one thing right - the price. The Hudson did come out at $50 just as indicated in the announcement. Some cool paper items for your collection. Items read more
