ORBIS TERRARUM DESCRIPTIO DUOBIS PLANIS HEMISPHAERIIS COMPREHESA . IS THE TITLE ACROSS THE TOP OF THIS WORLD MAP THAT HAS BEEN PASTED AND VARNISHED INTO THIS WOODEN FOLDING TABLE TOP ON WROUGHT IRON LEGS WITH BRASS ENDED FEET.
I HAVE CUT AND PASTED THE MEANING BELOW:
A diagram (descriptio) of the world (orbis terrarum) shown (compresa - not a literal translation , but that's the idea) in two (duobis) flat (planis) hemispheres (hemisphaeriis).'
Original map maker was a Dutchman - - Nicholas Van Geelkercken - Amsterdam 1617(1632) . A world map, from the point of Dutch Cartography in the Seventeenth Century. The twin hemispheres are surround by decorative drawings representing the flora and fauna of the various parts of the world.
There are images of Adam and Eve and many other religious and historic images : figures and animals. There is the map makers name on the left hand side spelt in Dutch and written America illustration from the 1499 's. I don't understand Latin but if required I would be happy to send closer pictures.
I don't know if this is decoupage or a map pasted or varnished across the top, embedded into the black frame on board wood painted or stained black . There is light scuffing on the metal but no dents. The surface is good with no scratches in the gloss finish.
