You are viewing a super rare early doubled sided Gulf Refining Company porcelain flanged sign, measures 22 ins long by 18 ins tall with a 2 in flange, has 5 holes for hanging, wtg is 7 3/4 lbs, very heavy ,has areas of restoration on edges ,the word gulf , g and s in gasoline , has stains and scratches, but overall a super great find, of a early gulf porcelain doubled sided flanged sign, the history of gasoilne being that oil was discovered in 1859, by Col Edwin L. Drake, in Titusville, Pa.,many oil company,s had their start in Pennsylvania, Tidewater oil, co, , now getty, Prue oil co, now Union oil Co. , ,John D, Rockefeller,s Standard oil of Cleveland, and later Pennzoil and Continental oil co, now Gulf Refining oil Company was formed in 1901, with partners, John H. galey and James M. Guffey , two Pennsylvanians, , with the help of Pittsburgh financier Andrew Mellon, of the Mellon banking family, formed the Gulf Refining Company, then in 1907 , the present Gulf Oil Company was formed, with Mellon and J M guffey as the principals, now gulf was know as the Gulf Oil Company, the oil industry owes much to Karl Benz , a German engineer who developed the first gasoline vechicle in 1885, frank and charles Duryea introduced American, s first gasoline powered motor vehicle in 1893, , but it took Henry Ford to make them popular, , in 1903 he sold 600 model A Fords for $850 each, by 1908 , he introduced the model Model T , which he manufactured by the assembly line method, by 1911, more than 500,000 automobiles have been sold in the Untied States, this is the first year most oil compamy,s gasoline sales were greater then sales of kerosene now as t were a great number of cars on the road, a need for a place to fuel these cars were needed, up until 1909 -10, you needed fuel for your car you would go to blacksmith,s shop, hardware or livery stable to get it, , in 1910,John A. Tokheim of Cedar rapids Iowa, invented the Tokheim Dome oil pump, in 1910 the first cubside pumps with undergraound staorage were introduced, this led to traffic congestion, to eliminate this problem , garages began to use self measuring storage systems , with self measuring pumps, , this all led to the world,s first true gasoilne station, which was opened by the Gulf OIL company on Baum Boulevard in Pittsburgh in December of 1913, a pump like the one in the picture would have been used, and a sign like the gulf sign would have been nailed to a pole outside next to the self measuresing pump, like the Gilbert and Barker one , in the picture , 1910, made in Springfield Mass, this pump would measure a 1, or 2 or 3 gallons, ect, into a steel gas can for your use, now on the flange of the sign has marker, Baltimore, enamel and Novelity Co , Balti, Md, and 200 fifth Ave ,N Y, see picture, this sign would have been on the pole next to the pump, t are 5 holes in the flange for hanging the sign, the sign on both sides says, , "That good Gulf Gasoline," Gulf refinging Company, "don,t miss this great piece of early history of the gasoline industry, and thank you for vierwing our auction |
