This is an original whale butchering hook this is very large measuring 24 inches across. It came out of a Maine whaling collection and is very very rare. It was ship made from the piece of a puncturing harpoon used to penetrate the whales lungs. Original half arrow tip and iron shaft was curved to the handle which is the same shaft bent around and over onto itself. Handle is a wrapped tar cloth. Excellent condition. This is definitely early 1800's based on the half arrow spear tip and iron. Hook is 24 inches long and 5 1/4 inches across at the handle with a large curve type hook curve. Hook is in excellent condition. This hook saw heavy use and is an early 1800's whaling tool. This is from a collection that I acquired last month in Portland Maine. Excellent condition and is a museum piece. Used to butcher the whale carcass when removing blubber strip for the smelting pots. Produced by an onboard blacksmith from a broken piercing harpoon shaft.
