THIS THANGKA WAS PAINTED BY 6TH AND 7TH GENERATION TIBETAN THANGKA PAINTERS!! Both escaped from Tibet. T are very few thangka painters left who are actually Tibetan. These few need to be supported! Most in Nepal are now from Newari, Tamang, or Sherpa ethnic groups. Read more information below about these painters.

Very large thangka! Measuring about 21 inches by 30 inches, not counting the outer red colored borders.

Srid-Pa-Ho Protection Mandala Thanka. Transforming inner negativity, repairing the damage of destructive emotion, transmitting the blessings of the enlightened compassionate heart and awakened mind, this skillful means of wisdom in action becomes medicine for the mind and a shield for the heart.

Tibetan astrology depicts the signs and symbols of the universe in this traditional format, possibly introduced from China as early as the seventh century and popular in Tibet since the seventeenth century. The central figure is a large golden tortoise, representing the Bodhisattva of Knowledge, upon whom are drawn various geomantic diagrams, such as the nine magic squares and symbols of the eight planets. This type of Thangka is often hung in homes for protection and displayed for special occasions.

This thangka is not mounted in brocade and unfortunately I cannot provide that service at this time but should be able to shortly.

Please compare my detailed thangka photos to other thangkas available on eBay to determine the quality. Don't bother to compare them to the extremely low quality glut of fake "antique" or "old" "Tibetan" thangkas from China that have flooded the market in the last few years. T IS no comparison with these fakes that are as iconographically as incorrect as you can possibly find! These thangkas are really terrible quality!! I haven't seen a genuine antique Tibetan thangka on ebay in MANY years. Not only has China 's brutal regime been systematically eliminating Tibet 's culture and religion in Tibet , they are ruining the art of thangka painting w it is barely hanging on in exile in Nepal and India .

I had the privilege of living with a Tibetan family for almost 3 months in the summer of 2006 in Kathmandu that contained a 6th generation and 7th generation thangka painter. This thangka was begun by the man I called "Po-po-la" for 3 months, whose real Tibetan name is Thargyal. Before beginning any thangka, he reads the corresponding scriptures about the deities to be portrayed. Then he draws the figures in pencil according to strict geometic proportions written many hundreds of years ago. After that, the painting begins - with colors that have also been described for centuries.
