This is second of 2 fantastic items that walked into a militaria show this past weekend that I am listing on ebay. The item is a Sodegarami (sleeve entangler). This item has been described in a publication as follows: "This is a late Edo-period Sodegarami sleeve entangler. This polearm arresting implement was the most frequently used of the standard Edo-period police station called Torimono Sandogu (3 tools of arresting). The short spikes were thrust into an offenders kimono or other clothing with a twisting action to entangle the material, then the person could be pushed to the ground and imobilized." This item also seems to incorporate elements of the polearm called Sasumata, "which had a U shaped end used to pin the neck or limbs." This pole has a beautiful patina on both the wood and the hand wrought metal spikes and these are the first that I have seen in many many years. The only thing that the seller could tell me about these items was that they were brought back from Japan many years ago by a relative. The 2 upward hooks measure approx. 3 in. long (including the bend), and the 3 lower hooks measure approx. 2 in. including the bend. The upward spike measures approx. 1 in. The polearm itself measures approx. 58 in. from the top of the spike to the bottom of the iron endcap. This polearm does not seem to be as heavily constructed read more
