This is a contemporary Japanese thatched rain cape or "mino." It is woven of straw, probably rice straw. It is 38" in length and approximately 22" wide. The "mino" or "mingei" was worn in the rural regions in the summer rainy season. It shed rain effectively and allowed ventilation when it was warm. This is a contemporary rendering of this tribal art in manner of weaving, decoration and materials. Very collectible.
