LARGE FINELY CARVED CHINESE IVORY FIGURE OF EMPEROR Present is a very fine quality and large carved ivory figure of a Chinese emperor or king. He is wearing very fancy robes which are completely engraved and scrimshawed. The man has a very fancy hat or crown. He holds a sword in one hand and strokes his beard with the other. His robes are detailed with clouds and dragons. The carving is completely three-dimensional and is carved from a single piece of elephant ivory. It is hands, the folds and drapes of the robes as well as the tassels and cords from the sword and his crown come completely off the surface. I believe this piece was made in the 1930s to the 1950s. It is signed on the underside of the base. The base might have been glued to a wooden stand at some time. This piece has no stand, but it is very stable. The condition is excellent. I can find no breaks, no chips, no repairs, and no problems of any kind. The height is 11 7/8 inches. We also have the matching carving, featuring the Empress or the Queen.
