Presented for auction are two Lionel 9782 Rock Island Boxcars. These boxcars are brand new and unrun. They were built from 1977 to 1978 as part of Lionel's Famous Name Collector's Series about which Lionel stated on the car boxes "These 10 1/2 inch long freight cars accurately represent the most famous names in the railroad industry. Lionel quality features give our railroaders realism and lasting fun". Lionel made 80 different boxcars in the 9700 series with multiple variations of a number of them.I have owned one of these cars since 1991 and the other since 2004. During that time, other than during the initial inspection right after I bought them, these cars have been sealed in a storage box in an environmentally controlled facility. They are now only available on the secondary market w at they bring as much as $25 each. While each of the cars grades out at C-9, the boxes range from P-8 down to P-6. The P-6 box was downgraded due to a torn end flap as shown in photograph 4. Both boxes, which are not the strongest rolling stock boxes which Lionel ever built, show some shop wear from being over 32 years old. Features of these 9782 Boxcars as set forth in Lionel's 1977 Catalog include: Metal wheels Fast angle wheels Needle point bearings Realistic trucks Opening doors Crisp markings Superb detailing Remote control knuckle couplersDimensions: read more
