British Collection, London Description: This is a perfect and rare example of an authentic Somali headrest. From "Sleeping Beauties" By William Dewey: "The Exquisite formal qualities of Somali headrests, combining subtle curvilinear, circular and elliptical shapes with intricate interlace surface ornamentation, make them among the most widely recognized and appreciated nomadic art forms. The headrests are are carved of a very fine-grained, tough but light-weight wood, known as hagar in Somali and yucub wood. A tree branch which has forked into equal sections is selected, the basic shape is roughed out by cutting a hole through the center, then shapes refined and the intricate surface patterns cut last. The wood is usually left its natural color and over time gains a rich patina. Somali headrests are used by both men and women with women's being more ornate. These headrests become a tangible symbol of vigilance and strength and are also central to nuptial ceremonies."
