Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied tab handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a boldly slip-trailed design of a sunflower with tulips extending to the left and right of the blossom. Reverse decorated with three sawtoothed lines of cobalt slip. Milburn maker's mark impressed under one handle. Excellent decoration and color. Two chips to one handle. Large sealed vertical Y-shaped crack on side of jar, with the top of the Y extending onto front and reverse. Additional tight cracks to underside and base. Two chips to one handle.
