Original Tsukioka Yoshitoshi Japanese Wood Block Print 1879 Offered in this eBay auction is an original Japanese woodblock print by Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), the most famous print maker of the Meiji Period. The print is from the series, Mirrors of Famous Generals of Japan (Dai Nihon Meisho Kagami) which was published between 1878-1880 and contains some of Yoshitoshi's greatest warrior prints. Depicted is image number 25 in the series which shows Yorinobu no Minamoto (968-1048) on horseback trying to ford a river. Yorinobu was one of the most famous generals of the Minamoto clan, perhaps best known for defeating the the rebellion of Taira no Tadatsune in the province of Kai in the year 1031. In putting an end to this rebellion, Yorinobu not only furtd the Court's goals and his own reputation, but he created an opening for the Minamoto clan to influence politics in the eastern portions of the country. The print is a very good impression in fairly good condition (some wrinkling at the bottom) and with good color (a bit of yellowing due to age, but otherwise fine colors). It has been custom framed for display in museum quality conservation mounts.
