Nice Refinished Antique Flat Top Steamer Trunk With Straps, and Buckles, Working Lock & Key and Original Interior Tray Here is a really beautiful large refinished flat top steamer trunk from the late 1800's to around 1900. This one is a true flat top with no factory arch. Here are the trunk's measurement s: from left to right across the front is 36 1/2 inches, from floor to top is 24 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 21 inches. This beautiful trunk appears to be made up of poplar base wood with oak outer slat boards. We have finished the wood with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. There are some typical older distress marks on the wood in various places. These markings include older nicks and dings along with some stress cracks. Just abou tall of the trunks that we refinish and offer on ebay have similar distress marks since these trunks are old and have been in existence for a very long time. Who knows how many railroad stations and trains this trunk may have been on in the past. This flat top comes with the original signed and patent dated working lock. It is signed, "Eagle Lock Co Terryville CT Pat'd Dec 6 1892". We do have a close up picture showing the date and signature on the lock. We have matched up a key that does work properly in this lock. The front latches are original and do work properly since the springs are in good condition. This trunk originally came with leather straps with buckles when it was made. They were eroded away when we received this trunk. We have run a pair of Amish made leather straps with roller buckles up the front and across the top where the original ones once were. In addition to the working lock and front latches, these leather straps with roller buckles help secure the trunk's top to it's base when buckled. The side handles have also been replaced with black leather straps. We acquire our leather products for these trunks from an Amish man in an Amish community near our home here in Pennsylvania. Going to the interior, this beautiful trunk comes with the original divided tray. We replaced the cardboard bottom on this tray with wood to make it sturdier. The interior wood on this trunk and tray have received two coats of polyurethane. We have added a nice trunk maker's style picture to the underside of the top. It portrays a Victorian woman standing in a boat on a pond. We had to reattach one of the hinges with small bolts to give the top strength and we filled in a stress crack at the top left edge above the handle cap metal to assure strength in that area. We glued a stress crack running across the back of the trunk. This nice trunk is large and could hold a lot of blankets, clothing, and other personal belongings. It would look nice in a bedroom at the foot of the bed. To tell you the truth, this trunk would look nice anywhere inside your home where storage space is needed. Our trunks have been making wonderful lifetime lasting gifts for loved ones on special occasions for about twelve years now on ebay. Going to the exterior bottom underneath this trunk, we have finished the bottom and this trunk has the wider factory metal casters on the bottom, and they do still spin. This is a nicer fancier trunk than most of the more simple flat tops we acquire. It does have a very nice arrangement of wood, leather, and metal. It also has some nice features which aren't always obtainable on each trunk that we refinish. This includes the signed patent dated lock, the leather straps with buckles, and the original divided tray.
