ROLL OF 40 SILVER NICKELS - THE SECRET SILVER Wartime Nickels Contain 35% Silver Picture is representative only and is of one of the rolls being sold. They will come to you in a labeled plastic tube as shown in the picture. One of the best kept secrets among silver collectors/hoarders is the worth of the wartime nickels. During World War II, nickel was needed for the war effort so the composition of five cent coins from 1942 to 1945 became 35% silver, 56% copper and 9% manganese. Due to the size and weight of a nickel, there's almost as much silver content as in a 90% silver dime from 1964 and earlier. These nickels were intended to be recalled after the war and melted but it never happened. Many silver collectors have overlooked these coins. If we ever wind up with a bartering system (take a hard look at the economy and what's happening to the dollar), those that have prepared will simply begin bartering with our silver coins. That's fine but don't forget that change will have to be made in silver coins. These silver nickels fit the bill very nicely. It would be prudent to have a few rolls to go along with your other silver coins. The total melt value of these coins is just under $2.16 each ($86.33 per roll of 40 with silver at $37.86 per ounce on 31 March). Were you aware of that?
