Rare Old Stone Owl Effigy Peace Pipe This is an awesome stone owl effigy peace pipe from a large Illinois collection I bought. This pipe some minor nicks around the rim of the bowl and some of the edges. It also has some minor nicks and scratches here and there, but the patina is beautiful and it is a very rare piece. The pipe is from the early 1900's and measures 3 5/8 inches long, 1 3/4 inches tall and 1 3/4 inches wide at the widest point. The Native Americans did not smoke pipes for the sake of smoking as people do today. They believed smoking to be very spiritual and combined it with prayer and communion with the Great Spirit. That to me is what makes effigy pipes so interesting. There is always a reason for the particular effigy, Not simply decoration. These pipes were always treated with great care and respect.
