AMERICAN BRILLIANT CUT GLASS STRAUS "Imperial" Carafe and Matching Tumblers -- No Reserve -- This is a large Quart-size, ovid-shaped carafe in the early "Imperial" pattern (also known as "Encore"), accompanied by 2 identical Straus "Imperial" matching tumblers. This design was patented on February 2, 1892 by Herman Siegel for L. Straus and Sons. It is referenced in several places: in the 1893 Straus catalogue; in Identifying American Brilliant Cut Glass by the Bill and Louis Boggess in photo P422. (The "P" categorizes the pattern as "Premium" (as opposed to "Standard" or "Choice")). Pearson rates the Straus "Imperial" pattern as Rare and High-priced and states that this is "a lovely pattern that is well worth collecting". The carafe measures approximately 9" in height, with widths of 6-1/4" and 4-1/2". On the side of the carafe are three 16-point hobstars enclosed in diamonds with raised centers, and finely cut strawberry diamond also enclosed in diamonds. T are fans and cross-hatched vesicas cut in between the hobstars and strawberry diamond. The neck rises to form an octagonal-shaped opening with notched cutting up the sides. The bottom is finished with a 12-point hobstar with raised center. The 2 matching tumblers are 3 ¾" in height and approx. 3" wide at the top. Each of these pieces have a solid, heavy feel to them.
