This is a superb Sundra lama Gser Than thangka of white tara in the 'long life trinity' w she is seen with Amitayus buddha and Namgyalman below along with guru rinponche, Je-tsong khapa and Buddha above. All in all, SIX, magnificently painted figured The gold work upon Sundra Lama is amongst the heaviest and most liberally used. Everything you see which glitters and shines represents Pure gold. I need not tell you how the price of gold is sky rocketing, making the creation of these thangkas to be extremely expensive. A feature of Sundra Lama are the individual faces on all subjects in the thangka and their proportions. He takes one full day alone to draw the facial expressions! To create the gold background of this scroll painting, powdered gold is mixed with glue and applied to the canvas. Only a small number of colors is used in this rare style of gold-background (Tib.: gser thang ) Thangka. The detail shown above contains glossy areas, which are a special feature of this type of scroll painting. The Thangka artist polishes the gold surface of the painting with a sharp, semiprecious stone to create symbols and shadings on the surface without using colours. It is very difficult to capture this effect in a photograph. To show these polished areas as well as possible, the photo shown above was taken at an oblique angle to the surface. To create the gold background, goldpowder mixed with glue is applied on the canvas. Only a few colors are used for the painting process. This thangka measures a LARGE (given that is it a pure gold thangka) 22 x 16 inches in size. Please understand, in traditional thangka art the artist does not take any merit for the work they create as it is a tribute to the dharma and the deity they create. it is only recent requests by many from the west that thangka art be signed by the artist. Few comply, others who are strictly traditional are not able to ad to this. Indeed the odd thangka might be signed but a majority will not be. Please do not fall prey to the misconception that a piece of thangka art is worth more when signed by the artist. The inner frame of brocade (often red) can be thought of as a rainbow gateway beyond which lies the pure land inhabited by the deity the Thangka represents. Attached to the top of the frame is a rectangle of colored silk which is long enough to hang all the way down to the bottom of the painting. This acts as a cover for the Thangka and allows it to be 'put to sleep' when it is not in use, as well as acting as a protective dust cover to keep the painting safe when it is stored. This material we use is the highest grade traditional Tibetan motif brocade, t are a great deal of Chinese brocade symbols out t used with a blend of materials to create- what the Chinese sellers use known as” poly-silk:” but we utilize only the highest grade varanasi pure silk and classical Tibetan brocade to mount our thangkas . The finished painting is sewn within a brocade frame and finished with ribbons and silk to protect the image.
