This cohoba inhaler is made of manatee bone. Cohoba was the hallucinogen used by the Taino to communicate with the Gods. The inhaler has been treated with a preservation hardening substance to preserve the bone..thus the dull shine, more noticeable in photos than when holding it. The central crack in the bone is more of a shallow stress line from aging. The piece is solid. The snuffing hole is at the base of the figure, see photo 5, and the recess held the drug. It has suspension holes at the neck to be worn as a pendant, likely used to sustain the ritual illumination. Length is 7.5cm or 2.9". Originally from the Dominican Republic and dating c1000-1500AD.Interested in Taino art history? Check out my book "Taino Sculpture, Art of the Gods".
