The Axe/ Indian artifact comes from an old family collection in southwest Kentucky. Culturally the piece is from the Early Archaic period, some 8,000+ years before present. The material is a veryt dark grainy form of quartz, pecked-and-polished to form. The silght pitting to the surface comes from hundreds (if not thousands) of taps from a harder piece of stone, tiny bits of material are removed with each hammerfall. The bit of this artifact is superbly polished. Length is 5&3/16"x 3&1/16", and thickness on the heel is 1&1/2".
