OBJECTS OF DEVOTION Vintage AGNUS DEI ~Hand Made by CARMELITE NUNS Description & Payment Information This is an exquisite Agnus Dei amulet from the first half of the 1900's. Small pieces of wax cut from a large Agnus Dei were traditionally sewn into small pouches, such as this one made of gold leather with silk embroidery and shaped as a heart. The Carmelite nuns hand made and decorated these small works of art to keep the sacramental safe and clean. This one is a beautiful example dating back to the reign of Pope Pius XII. It is in mint condition and measures 1" - 3 &1/4" with the lace presentation card. Prior to Vatican II, the Agnus Dei was cut from the paschal candle and blessed by the Pope during the first year of the pontificate and every seven years tafter. When piously carried or kept at home it provides protection against flood, defence against thunderstorms and windstorms, security against sudden death and aid toward atonement.Please view my other auctions for more antiques from Catholica.
