Wash Drawing IMPERIAL PALACE - TOKYO c1870s This is an unframed wash drawing, of the Imperial palace at Edo (Tokyo). It is initialled " G V " at the bottom right and titled in French at the bottom "Entree du O Shiro. Palais du Mikado. Yeddo, Japon" It is an unusual view of the palace as seen from the South side of the moat. Regarding the date, the wooden structures show in the drawing were replaced in 1887 and the caption implies some confusion between 'Yeddo' castle and the Imperial Palace, suggesting that the transfer of the imperial capital to Edo in 1868, was still relatively recent in the artist's memory, when painting the scene. Edo was renamed Tokyo in July of the same year. It is 9 3/4 by 6 1/4 inches (251x159mm) and in good condition Shipping Postage and packing for this item by airmail is $7.00 If you live in Europe the cost is $5.25 ...and if you live in the UK, 1st class post & packing is $4.25 This includes insurance up to $60.
