2 x Messrs Hoare, London, 25.10.1880 + 09.09.1918 Imprint:- None . Watermark:- MESSIEURS HOARE FLEET STREET with the Leather Bottle icon between the two. All housed within a single line scroll framework. Immaculately centered on 1880 item, maintained on 1918 item, but cheque cut from a larger watermarked sheet therefore not centered and in reduced size as the cheque itself is. Two i nteresting & contrasting cheques. T he 1880 item printed on fine high quality paper - 250 x 95 mm, visually almost translucent, but full bodied & robust in its firmness . The highly decorative security panel on t he reverse features no less than 39 leather bottles , the house symbol of Hoares. ebay supersize scans used for your enjoyment and inspection. The late 1918 cheque reflects wartime economy in its reduced size - 262 x 77 mm on very ordinary paper and the highly decorative security panel on the reverse om itted - i.e. uniface. A very popula r pair of cheques, hence our repeated listings at the original ebay start price. The increase i n Stamp Duty from 1d to 2d was to be op erative from 1st September 19 18, so this is a very early example of the 2d blue, probably one of the earliest available in the market. 1880 was probably the first 1d red oval prior to that it was plain embossed - i.e. colourless sometimes referred to (unfortunately) as the read more
