1857 Letter from Missionary Traveling Hawaii Transporting Bees This is a great handwritten letter from Edward Beckwith to his family while traveling to Hawaii. Beckwith was a missionary to Hawaii and become one of the first Presidents of Oahu College in the 1850s. Beckwith was apparently one of the earliest people to try and transport bees to Hawaii and he talks about that in this letter. It is from 1857 and has great content and says in part: I had a very pleasant trip to the city…On the Cars I fell in with Gov Hawly of Salisbury, Holley perhaps it is and had a very pleasant chat with him. He is not only an intelligent but also a companionable man a real gentleman…. I received a letter from Mr Gordon saying that Mr Alexander would be here tomorrow morning with some species for me so I shall be provided for.. We are off at 2 o’clock in the steamer St Louis, it is one of the Atlantic Steamer chartered for this trip and is probably a better built vessel than the California Steamers the time of sailing was deferred on account of the change of vessel. The bees are safely aboard and the agents have given me every facility for taking good care of them… Check out my other items !Be sure to add me to your favorites list !
