1908 WASHINGTON FRANKLIN 344 SCHERMACK w/CONTROL PERFIN EXPERIMENTAL Perfins Catalog Des 91-1. User unknown. This 12 hole square pattern was long thought to be the early experimental pattern before Schermack ultimately decided on the 9 hole square pattern.A couple of these are currently listed on Ebay priced from $120 to $275. This is a much nicer copy with Schermack slots on both sides. Schermacks with control identification marks are a very interesting subset to collect. Although Schermack perforation were in use for 20 years, stamps with control perfins a much shorter time and are very scarce.In 1909 The Schermack Company, operating out of Detroit & Chicago, was looking to expand to the New York market. New York companies requested perfins, to thwart employee misuse and theft. The Schermack company developed a die, placed inside of their mailing machine, that would punch a control pattern one stamp at a time just prior to being cut from the coil. Each user would have their own unique pattern.The control perfin was so popular in NY that several Detroit and Chicago companies requested them as well. But just as quickly as this burst on the scene, within 12 months time they were discontinued in NY.
