1950 American Flyer No. 16 Electronic Rectiformer 150 Watts w/Original BoxDescriptionSEE ALL PHOTOS AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF LISTINGFor your consideration, a beautiful, fully restored, 1950 American Flyer No. 16 150-Watts Electronic Rectiformer with Original Box w/Inserts, New Vacuum Tube and original Operating Instructions.RECTIFORMER OVERVIEWThe No. 16 Electronic Rectiformer is designed specifically to operate American Flyer Electronic Propulsion Trains and will operate any electric trains which use 7 to 15 volts DC. It will operate only on 110-120 volts AC from 50 to 133 cycles and cannot be plugged into Direct Current without the use of an inverter. 1950 was the last year of production for American Flyer Rectiformers.There are two sets of terminals on the front of the Rectiformer. One set is marked “Direct Current for Trains”, and this set is used to supply variable voltage from 7 to 15 volts to the track. The other set is marked “Alternating Current for Accessories” and supplies a constant 15-volt AC for accessory operation. When the Rectiformer draws DC current the vacuum tube on the top emits a light blue light. When the Rectiformer is idle the vacuum tube emits an orangish-red light. Never touch the vacuum tube while its on or you will get burned. That’s the reason for the metal cage around the tube. A short circuit anywhere in the train, track or equipment is indicated by a steady blinking of the blue light in the tube.The No. 16 Electronic Rectiformer is equipped with a double automatic thermostatic circuit breaker which protects both the AC and DC circuits. The case is made of pressed steel and has a gray crinkle finish. This Electronic Rectiformer is dated 8/25/1950 as indicated by the “Inspectors Voucher” which is included. It sold new for $25 in 1950 which is equivalent to $261.15 today.SUMMARY OF REPAIRS AND UPGRADES PERFORMED ON THIS RECTIFORMERThe original Sylvania 1237 Rectiformer vacuum tube stamped “A.C. Gilbert Co.” was damaged and inoperable so I replaced it with a brand-new tube of the exact model. I’m including the original burned-out tube with the sale. The original thermostatic circuit breakers have been cleaned, tested and work as intended. Both coils have been completely cleaned and tested as well as all electrical contact points. All oxidation has been removed from all internal metal and electrical surfaces. The power cord is original. It is normally my policy to replace all power cords regardless of condition, but this power cord is in excellent condition. There are no cracks or damage of any kind, so I did not replace it. The DC output terminals tested at a whopping 25 VDC at full throttle and the AC terminals tested at 17 VAC. All rust has been removed from the bottom baseplate and its been re-painted to match the original color. All wiring and connections have been cleaned and inspected. The metal case and baseplate are free of any dents or dings but does have some minor scratches typical with age. Everything on this Rectiformer is completely original except for the vacuum tube. The metal nameplate has some paint loss and scratches as shown in the photos. The brass binding posts and nuts are original, corrosion-free, and in excellent condition. This Rectiformer has passed an electrical safety test to ensure that the circuit breaker functions properly and there is no electrical leakage to exposed metal parts. Please note that the circuit breaker is designed to protect the transformer, not your train! The core and laminations have been inspected and tested for insulation resistance and dead spots and the Rectiformer is super quiet with virtually no noticeable humming sound. Overall this Rectiformer is in excellent, beautiful condition for its age and is completely operational and ready for use or to add to your collection. Completely rust-free.
