Up for sale is a fine Glacial ly Kame Shell Necklace. It is about 24 inches long with around 81 shell beads; the paper tag says 28" but it is only approximately 24". These nice shells were found on a Glacial Kame Site in Logan County, Ohio. I purchased this necklace several years ago from a respected collector, Garry Mumaw (Versailles, Ohio). This nice artifact and came out of Claude Britts Collection. The Glacial Kame Culture was a culture of Archaic people in North America that occupied southern Ontario, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. In his book, "The Archaeology of Ohio", Dr. Robert N. Converse notes on page 112 that most of the Glacial Kame sites in Ohio were discovered and destroyed long before radicarbon dating was known, but that the Williams site in Wood County had dates aorund 2,700 BP (before present time) and other sites in Michigan and Ontario date between 4500 and 3000 BP. He also notes that numeorus other dates for Late Archaic manifestations agree with the 5000 to 2500 BP age estimates for Glacial Kame culture in Ohio. The name of this culture derives from its members' practice of burying their dead atop glacier-deposited gravel hills. Among the most common types of artifacts found at Glacial Kame sites are shells of marine animals and goods manufactured from a copper ore, known as float copper.I accept returns for up read more
