An Unusual, 19th C. Match Chest. We are happy to offer this very unique, early, specially designed and crafted friction match chest. With special features that include the interior paper decoration; the wonderful 19th handle (photo 3); the original latch for closing the box (photo 4); and channels, on the top, for the striking of matches. The entire box, with the exception of the bottom is covered with a friction material to accommodate the striking and lighting matches. There is one small metal cleat that is missing from the top (photo 6 or 7). Aside from that, it is in very good condition. History tells us that friction matches date back as early as 1825, and the abrasive materials used to create friction, included crushed shells, seeds, and sand. A wonderful and different piece of American history. Both a decorative and conversational piece. 6"w x 3" d x 2" hPlease view all photos and email with questions.
