Social realist painting of a rural scene with a wagon on a hilly road, by the early 20th century New York artist, Eugene Higgins. Original watercolor, signed lower right in pencil. Not examined out of the sealed frame (we did examine the painting with a magnifying glass to determine that it is not a printed reproduction of any sort). Image size is 7 inches tall by 9 inches wide. Overall frame size is 14.75 inches tall by 16.5 inches wide. CONDITION: The painting looks to be in great condition (we do not know how it is mounted in the frame, or the full paper size), linen mat is in good condition, frame has many scratches all around. ARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY: Eugene Higgins was a New York painter/etcher in the European style of social realism very much influenced by Honore Daumier and Jean-François Millet, with subjects focused on downtrodden rural working class people. In 1897, Higgins went to Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian under Jean Paul Laurens, Benjamin Constant and Jean Leon Gerome. He learned the art of etching while in France and the sale of the prints were his main income during his stay in France. He settled in New York and spent summers in Connecticut where he was a member of the Lyme Art Association.
