Avatamsaka Sutra I am planning on spending 2 months in the Golok area of Amdo, Tibet this summer at my teacher, Khentrul Lodro Thaye Rinpoche's monastery t In order to do so, I need a lot more cash than I have right now, so I am going to put as many items as I can on sale for as low a price as I can - many below cost! I plan on helping him finish rebuilding the monastery and school and hope to start taking photographs for a prospective book on him and his monastery. I'm disappointed that t seems to be so little interest in these thangkas and that people don't seem to realize what treasures they are. T are very few thankgas being painted by Tibetans today, and very few indeed done by 6th and 7th generation Tibetan painters like this one. Read the paragraphs below for information on them. The pencil design drawing for this thangka was done by a 6th generation Tibetan thangka painter!! I am making little or nothing on this painting. It has gotten very hard for the few Tibetan traditional thangka painters left in Nepal to make a living and compete with the Newari and Tamang painters who are wonderful artists but often don't follow the traditional methods. The last photo shows Po-po-la drawing the figures for another thangka. I had the privilege of living with a Tibetan family in Kathmandu for almost 3 months that contained a 6th generation and 7th generation thangka painter. Like every single other thangka done t, whether by students or by the masters - this one was begun by the man I called "Po-po-la" for 3 months, whose real Tibetan name is Thargyal. Before beginning any thangka, he reads the corresponding scriptures about the deities to be portrayed. Then he draws the figures in pencil according to strict geometic proportions written many hundreds of years ago. After that, the painting begins - with colors that have also been described for centuries. Po-po-la is now 76 years old and escaped from Tibet in 1962, shortly after being released from 3 years imprisonment and torture by the Chinese. He escaped over the border to Nepal close to Mt. Everest and stayed in the Khumbu region for many years, painting for Rinpoches in the area. He went back to Tibet when conditions improved in 1980 and got one of his sons, Wangdi, out. He has painted thangkas for Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Sakya Trizin, and many others. Several noted Western thangka artists have also studied with him for long periods, notably Andy Weber. This thangka is not mounted in brocade and unfortunately I cannot provide that service. Check out my other items !
