Original Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock print Figure Tokaido, 1851 The Figure Tokaido Series- Tonight we are excited to offer this incredible large collection of original Hiroshige Figure Tokaido prints. This estate collection included an amazingly large number of prints from the original series. The prints were in the collection of a Japanese family and were sold this year from the estate. Edo Era Originals- The Figure Tokaido was a complete set of 53 Tokaido scenes by Hiroshige printed in the ½ block format. Following the incredible success of the Hoeido Tokaido Hiroshige released a number of subsequent series of Tokaido stations. One of the most interesting, a departure from the landscape theme, was the Jimbutsu Tokiado (Figure Tokaido). In this series Hiroshige placed the emphasis on the characters encountered along the Tokaido road placing them in the various post stations along the journey. During the Edo era the Tokaido road was a gathering place and traveling route that saw a complete cross section of the population from the peasant working a rice field at the roadside to the feudal lord traveling in a huge entourage between his home province and the capital Edo . In this fascinating series Hiroshige illustrates the range or characters along the road and take the viewer back in time to Tokogawa Japan .
