Vintage Chinese Porcelain Vase Ox Blood Sang de Boeuf This porcelain vase was purchased in Hong Kong in May 1974 and came from my father's estate. He was a world traveler and avid collector of Chinese and Asian art. A nicely proportioned vase of classic Chinese design in a baluster shape. A classic Langyao Hong or sang de boeuf glaze, also known as ox blood. This is a very vitreous, deep red glaze due to the copper content. The glaze was believed to be produced at the Kangxi imperial kilns at Jingdezhen during the early 17 th century. Both the outside and inside of the neck rim are creamy off-white with a fine crackle finish in the glaze, often a trait in sang de boeuf, that covers the entire vase. T are three frits located on the neck. (see photos). In addition to the sang de boeuf glaze t is a wonderful flambé effect, in tones of periwinkle, that cascades down from the top of the neck and covers portions of the top one-half of the body. It is typical for the glaze to ooze down and then be ground off. This occurred on the outside of the bottom edge; it is relatively smooth to the touch. The bottom of the vase has the near-white glaze. The vase is in extremely good condition overall with only one spot with a very faint horizontal scratch located two-thirds of the way down the body. It is not readily visible. My father's inventory read more
