This saber was used by militia light artillery and cavalry units from 1810, through the Mexican War to the end of the Civil War. It has a 32 "" long, 1 ¼" wide, curved blade with a single, large fuller that terminate 9" back of the point at the beginning of the false edge. The blade is ¼" thick at the hilt and the metal parts of the hilt are brass. There is a reverse "P" knuckle bow. A ferrule at the base of the grips and a backstrap runs along the back of the partially leather covered grip ending in a bird's head shaped pommel. A nice example of an early unmarked American saber.
