ANTIQUEAMERICAN MILITIA LIGHT ARTILLERY SABER SWORD 1810 This isan example of a militia light artillery saber, 1810-1840. My reference for identification is Harold Peterson’s, The American Sword 1775-1945 (page 39 # 38). According to Peterson this pattern was used through the Mexican War and saw some service in the Civil War. Apparently this pattern was also used by militia cavalry units (even though federal regulations required iron mounted sabers). The example I am offering has an overall length of 35 inches: the blade is 30 ½ inches in length, 1 ¼ inches wide at the shoulder and ¼ inch thick. All metal parts of the hilt are brass. The grips are wood covered in leather. The condition is generally good. The blade has some stains with a 3 inch section of old rust (Please see the pictures). The edge is still sharp. The blade has a gentle bend to the left (with sword held edge down). I have tried to show this in a photo. All the brass has a beautiful age patina. The leather is 98% complete. The sword is tight with, perhaps, 1/16 inch movement. This is a light, well-balanced sword that is very “quick” in the hand. The saber has not been “messed with” or cleaned. There are no signs of abrasives other than the old feint scratches from sharpening.
