1888-1896 Antique French Haviland Limoges Oyster Plate, Sprigs of SeaweedClick images to enlargeDescription1888-1896 Antique French Haviland Limoges Oyster Plate, Sprigs of Seaweed & Water PlantsHaviland and Co., Limoges, made this oyster plate between 1888 and 1896, according to the marks on the back. This oyster plate has a distinctive seaweed and sea plant border, accented with gilt. Delicate sea plants are in each of the five generous oyster wells as well as the center sauce well. There is a subtle color palette: shades of green, pink, and brown. The border of the oyster plate is scalloped and there is a three dimensional design in each well consisting of curved fronds. The plate is 8 7/8 inches in diameter and in excellent condition - no chips, hairlines, or repairs. It looks like the plate was displayed rather than used. On the reverse is "H & Co." over "L" over "France" and "Haviland & Co." over "Limoges" in red. The mold for this oyster plate with the same marks (with different hand painting) is shown on page 103 of the reference book, "Oyster Plates" by Jim and Vivian Karsnitz.Get images thatmake Supersized seem small.
