This listing is for a African Zulu modern Isisquabetha-winnowing basket. (Fair Trade) Hand weaved.Women weave African Zulu baskets and work from their home. All basket colors are natural and obtained from boiling roots, leaves, berries and bark and other organic material of indigenous flora. African Zulu baskets weavers use age-old, time-honored methods that are passed on from mother to child. The patterns, each with their own meanings, vary from decorative bands to intricate triangles, diamonds, zigzags, and checkerboard motifs. There are five types of African Zulu basket. This basket is referred to as an Isisquabetha - winnowing basket and is not water-tight; the basket was made for carrying and storing grain - these baskets are also used for kneading bread. If you wanted to use it more as a decorative piece it does have a small loop weaved in it so you can hang on the wall or from a hook. Dimensions are as follows 11" x 9" x 2".These are known to be some of the highest quality African baskets. All the baskets are hand made using natural raw material obtained in the area. Each African Zulu basket is unique in shape, pattern, color, weave and size. No Two baskets are the same even if made by the same weaver. Any questions please ask before buying.
