I traveled to Southern Africa in 2002 and spent a month visiting safari camps in Botswana and Namibia. It is breathtaking country and the trip of a lifetime. I also became enamored of African baskets and began to collect them. But now I am moving to a smaller space and need to part with perhaps half of my collection. I will be listing 20-25 baskets over the next several weeks. All handmade, all one of a kind and all beautiful. Here is one I am offering:This UKHAMBA (beer basket) is unusual because of the strikingly different patterns that appear side by side. One of the patterns is a large diamond shapes surrounded by small triangles and enclosing checkerboards patterns. The other pattern is a dense one of many smaller diamond shapes. Overall, the numerous diamonds and triangles representing many unmarried men and women and the checkerboard representing good news and fruitfulness are symbolic of youth and fertility. In selecting baskets, I usually preferred the various natural shades of beiges, browns and taupes. But I found the lovely lovely shades of red irresistible and indeed, the addition of one bright color on one basket in your collection will add another level of interest to those of shape, size and pattern!Measurements are approximate:Height: 14" Diameter at widest point: 12"This basket is a completely unique, one of a kind read more
