For Sale at the Trading post is this really nice primitive firkin. This is an Antique Handmade Large Primitive Shaker Wooden Firkin or Sugar Bucket circa early 1800s. A Firkin is an old English Unit of Volume. The term firkin is currently used to refer to antique buckets, usually with a handle and lid. This Primitive Antique Firkin has a rich and warm patina with the original ochre/orange patina. The antique Shaker Firkin is large in size. The Antique Sugar Firkin has a wide bentwood band swing handle that is attached to the bucket with wooden button dowels and is pegged in the inside. The lid has the tapered copper nails, but are no longer attached to the band. I was going to extract them, but thought I would leave that up to the buyers discretion. The bottom of the antique firkin also shows an additional tapered finger band that surrounds the bucket. Also shown on the bottom and top is the tongue and groove with coopering. The Antique Handmade Primitive Firkin has three bentwood bands and one on the lid. Each of the bentwood bands overlap with finely crafted wire U nails and bent over. The Antique Primitive Firkin is in excellent condition and has aged appropriate patina. The Antique Shaker Firkin has not been cleaned to keep the original patina.
